Sherman fought in the Battle of Fair Gardens near Sevierville, TN and was injured and captured on January 27, 1864. He was removed from the battlefield by the enemy and taken to Rock Island Barracks in Illinois. He lived with his battle injuries for his lifetime, and you can see in his confederate photo that he is being supported by a crutch under his right arm.
