Private enlisted in Co. K, 43rd North Carolina Infantry on 25 Feb 1862 at the age of 16. He was wounded in the left leg on 2 Jul 1863. I’m about 98% sure that he was wounded in the field across from the present-day hospital on Long Lane in Gettysburg, PA. Pvt. White was evacuated with the rest of the wounded and recuperated in a Confederate hospital in Richmond, VA. In September 1863, he rejoined his unit and fought with it until he was paroled at Appomattox. In 1913, Pvt. White attended the 50th anniversary reunion of the Battle of Gettysburg and received a souvenir medal for attending. I have that medal displayed at my home. What makes my relationship with Pvt. White, my second Great Grandfather is that my mother was born in his house while he was alive. Attached you will find a picture of Private White and the medal. My grandmother has been known to say; “I don’t know why he was called ‘Captain’; he was just a private!”  When I told my mother about Private White being wounded at Gettysburg, she exclaimed, “That’s why he walked with a limp!”

Theodore and his lovely wife Elizabeth are laid to rest at the Pinebluff Cemetery, Pinebluff, NC.
