Born at Oglethorpe, Georgia, United States in 1837 to his parents Robert Montieth and Elizabeth Butler.

He had eight brothers and sisters.

William (then living in Putnam county) married Virginia Frances Paschall of Morgan County on November 12th 1861. On February 4th 1862 in Putnam County Georgia William enlisted as a 1st Sargent with “F” Company 44th Georgia Infantry Regiment. During the battle of Ellison’s Mill, Virginia on June 26th 1862 William was wounded and sent to Chimborazo Military Hospital in Richmond, Virginia.

On July 7th 1862 William died of his wounds he received eleven days earlier. On September 12th 1862 Willie Elizabeth Monteith his only child was born.
