Membership Process

Step 1

Determine Eligibility

The first step toward becoming a member is determining whether or not you meet the requirements for SCV membership. Membership is the Sons of Confederate Veterans is open to all male descendants of any veteran who served honorably, and whose service terminated honorably, in the armed forces of the Confederate States of America or one of the States thereof. Membership can be obtained either through direct or collateral family lines and must be documented genealogically. The minimum age for membership is twelve (12) years old. (For those under the age of twelve, there is the Cadet Program.)
The SCV does not restrict membership on basis of race, age, color, religion, national origin, nation of citizenship, or residency. Applicants for membership must be men of good character, who emulate the best qualities of the Confederate soldier.
Please note, each Camp of the SCV shall be the judge of its own members, subject to the restrictions of SCV Constitution and the Standing Orders, and each Camp shall be further charged with the responsibility of making the principal determination of an applicant’s character, temperament, and qualifications for membership

Membership Phamplet

You found out you were not eligible for membership? That’s OK. You can become a “Friend of the SCV!” By becoming a friend, you will get a certificate, a lapel pin, and a one-year subscription to the Confederate Veteran magazine, along with the satisfaction of helping further the mission of the SCV.

Step 3

Genealogy

Documenting a genealogical line from you to your Confederate ancestor is required for membership in the Sons of Confederate Veterans, as well as providing proof of your ancestor’s service record. Use the lineage chart in the MEMBERSHIP PAMPHLET to begin your family tree.

Your state library and archives likely has physical resources for in-person use. Online resources, such as Ancetry.com and FamilySearch.org, can be helpful in researching your family tree. Fold3.com is a great resource for military records. (Some of these sites require you to purchase an online membership.)

Need help compiling your genealogy? Contact the SCV’s Genealogy Committee for free assistance!

Step 4

Start the Application

You’ve determined you meet the requirements for membership. You’ve completed the research and have proof that you are descended from a Confederate veteran. Now, it’s time to fill out of the application portion of the MEMBERSHIP PAMPHLET.

You must complete Step 2 to know which camp you are petitioning for membership. If you do not wish to be a member of a local camp, you can be a “member at-large” by petitioning the Headquarters Camp, “Maj. Gen. William D. McCain Camp 584,” in Columbia, Tennessee. If joining Camp 584, mail your membership application, along with completed lineage chart, supporting documentation, and $40 check ($35 dues, plus $5 recording fee) to SCV HQ, P.O. Box 59, Columbia, TN 38402. If joining a local camp, please submit your dues and application to them.
