Joseph N. Spence was a farmer from Pasquotank County, NC. He was 20 years old and stood at 5′ 7″.
Spence enlisted in Elizabeth City, NC on 4 May 1861. He was a private in Co. L 17th North Carolina State Troops. Sent to Roanoke Island he was captured there after the battle on 8 February 1862. He was a POW for two weeks, paroled and later exchanged. Spence then enlisted on 25 March 1863 in Co. A 8th NC Infantry. He was wounded at the Battle of Plymouth, NC 0n 20 April 1864. After recuperating he returned to service and was wounded in the right ankle at the 2nd Battle of Fort Harrison, VA on 30 September 1864. At this point the war was over for him as he was not fit for service before the surrender at Appomattox.
He continued to farm and work in the lumber business after the war. Attended McBride Methodist Church in South Mills, NC. JN Spence passed away in 1917.
