Abram (Abe- Abraham) Howard was born about March 1834 and raised in Adams run/ Osborn South Carolina.

Abram, along with his brothers, enlisted 1861 at Hardeeville SC with the 11th  Infantry (also known as 9th Regiment) . The unit was organized during the summer of 1861 with men from Beaufort, Clarendon, and Colleton counties. The unit served in the Charleston area with fighting at Pocataligo, then was stationed at Hardeeville.

It was assigned to HAGOOD’S BRIGADE , then one company was permitted to organize and equip as a light battery (Beaufort Artillery), and the regiment served with nine companies. During the summer of 1863 it was again active in the Charleston area but later moved to Florida and then to Virginia in the spring of 1864.

He served the entire war (as his muster rolls prove) until his surrender and taking the oath in 1865 and was entitled to receive  the confederate pension (with newspaper articles to show). Family tradition holds That Abram went into the Civil War having a wife and 5 children. When he returned home from the war (or 1863/64)  he found that his wife and children all died of a fever. He would remarry later in 1873 and to father 12 children. It is said that following the War, Abraham served as one of wade Hampton’s Redshirts in Charleston.

Abram died February 23, 1923.
