Amos Sheffield was born in Dale, Alabama in 1846. His family moved to Florida around 1860. He ran away from home and crossed the state line, bac into Alabama, in order to join the Confederate Army as he was only 15 years old. He joined the 42nd Alabama Infantry, Co. E as a private. He was captured at Vicksburg on July 4, 1863. He was paroled on July 20, 1863. Surrendered May 10, 1865, in Tallahassee, Florida, and was paroled a second time on May 24, 1865, from Albany, Georgia.
