He was in active service from New Bern to Goldsboro, NC and the battles of Murfreesboro and Stone River, TN, which was fought in the last part of 1862; also, in the Eastern TN Campaign in the summer and fall of 1863. He was captured near the Cumberland Gap on September 9th, 1863, and spent the remainder of the war as a POW at Camp Douglas (IL). After the surrender Asa then enlisted with the 5th US Volunteer Infantry (K Co), and served out west in the Colorado territory. It was there in Colorado that he was discharged for medical reasons, and subsequently settled down to build a life.
