Enlisted at age 52 at Mossy Creek, TN in 43rd TN Regiment (Gillespie’s Volunteers) on October 19, 1861. After the 43rd enlistment was up, enlisted with Co. G, Walker’s Battalion, Thomas’ Legion, but this company was transferred shortly after to the 1st Tennessee Cavalry and became Co. H. Capt. Neff had 3 sons who also served with him; Samuel Neff, John Neff, and James Knox Polk Neff.
