Emsley Monroe Fogleman was born to William Condon Fogleman and Barbara Suitz on 31 January 1842 in Guilford County, North Carolina. He enlisted with the 45th North Carolina Company but was transferred to the 53rd North Carolina Company F on March 19, 1862. He served well during the war never leaving his post or failing to do his duty. He was wounded near Woodstock, Virginia and paroled at Appomattox, Virginia in April of 1865.
