John Calvin Akins was born 25 April, 1832, in Carrollton, Carroll Co., Georgia, the son of William and Mary (Quartermus) Akins. In 1836 he moved with his parents to Paulding Co., Georgia, then to Whitesville, Marshall Co., Alabama, by 1855, where he married Sarah Ellen Watson on 18 January, 1856. In 1862 John Calvin Akins and two of his brothers and their families moved to Walker Co., Alabama, where he and his brothers enlisted in Co. H, 56th Alabama Cavalry Partisan Rangers on 6 September, 1862. He served until April 1865 and was paroled near Sailsbury, North Carolina. Following the war, He returned to his family and home in Walker Co., Alabama, where he spend the rest of his life as a farmer. He died on 1 March, 1922, a Confederate pensioner, at nearly 90 years of age. He is buried in the cemetery of Union Chapel Methodist Church, near Jasper, Alabama.
