John Carson Lyon, son of Thomas Jefferson Lyon and the former Miss Margaret Carson Wideman, was born on the 19th of March 1841 in the area around Troy and Cedar Springs, South Carolina. John was educated at the English schools of Abbeville, taught by Francis Walker; then attending Willington, in Abbeville District and finishing for two years at Dr. Waddell’s famous Classical Academy. In 1861, John Lyon enlisted in the South Carolina Volunteer Militia, rising to the rank of Captain and serving in Company C, 7th South Carolina Volunteer Infantry Regiment; where he saw action in Northern Virginia. He was wounded in the left knee at the battle of North Anna, VA on May 23, 1864. After his recovery, Capt. Lyon continued with his regiment until they surrender to General William T. Sherman at Greensboro, NC, on May 2nd, 1865. On May 17, 1866, Capt. John Lyon married Miss Margaret Elizabeth Jordon, daughter of Samuel Jordan Esq. and the former Mary Ravlin Ansley of Cedar Springs, South Carolina; with whom he had five children: Alfred “Alph” Lyon (1871 – 1942) Dr. John Lyon (1874 – 1920) Mary Margaret “May” [Lyon] Bradley (1876 – 1947) Thomas Jordan Lyon (1879 – 1928) Josephine Sloan [Lyon] McMurray (1881 – 1958) For over 40 years, John and Margaret Lyon were members of Cedar Springs A.R.P. church; where John was a Ruling Elder. Capt. John Lyon departed this life on April 4th, 1906 at the age of 65. He is buried in Melrose Cemetery beside his wife, Margaret Jordon Lyon.
