The 28 year old school teacher from Pasquotank County, NC enlisted on 14 Sept 1861. Commanding Officer of Co. A  8th NCST. Captured at the Battle of Roanoke Island, NC 0n 8 Feb 1862. POW for two weeks, paroled and later exchanged. 1st Lt JT Spence was captured at Gaines Farm, Virginia on 1 June 1864 and sent to prison at Fort Delaware and later Point Lookout Prison. He was released on 14 May 1865. Spence was 5’8″ tall, light complexion, dark hair, and grey eyes. The 8th NC Infantry was in Clingman’s Brigade, Hoke’s Division, Longstreet’s Corp, Army of Northern Virginia.
