Pvt. Nathan Daniel Bolen

Pvt. Bolen enlisted on May 4th 1861 in Rappahannock County, Virginia along side his brother, Pvt. James Jaret Bolen. The Bolen brother’s were assigned to Co. B of the 7th Virginia Infantry Regiment under Captain Thomas Massie. The 7th was mustered into service at Culpepper C.H. under Col. Robert Taylor and was assigned to BG Jubal Early’s 6th Brigade. Both brother’s participated in Early’s actions at Blackburn Ford and the assault on Chinn Ridge during the 1st Battle of Manassas, which would be the reinforcing support that would force the Union Troops from the field. After Manassas, the 7th was transferred to A.P. Hills Brigade, Ewell’s Division and participated in Longstreet’s defense of Ft. Magruder in the Battle of Williamsburg on the 5th of May 1862. Throughout the Seven Days Campaign, the 7th was transferred to Kemper’s Brigade under Longstreet’s Division. Nathan was alongside his brother James at a the Battle of Frayser’s Farm (Glendale) when James was wounded and taken from the field during Kemper’s assault against  Heintzleman’s Union troop on the 30 June 1862. The brother’s would not see each other again.

After the Seven Days Campaign had ended after Malvern Hill, Pvt. Nathan Daniel Bolen took ill with a serious case of pneumonia and passed away on 12 August 1862 in Chimbarazo Hospital in Richmond. Although the exact location of his burial is unknown, it can be confirmed through hospital records and after discussion with NPS Historian Robert Krick that he was interned in Oakwood Cemetery in Richmond, probably in the vicinity of Rows F-H.
