When William Cantey Lesesne was born on October 31, 1846, in Williamsburg, South Carolina, his father, Francis James Lesesne, was 31 and his mother, Amarintha Nelson Plowden, was 28. He had five brothers and two sisters. He was killed in the Second Battle of Weldon Railroad on August 21, 1864, near Petersburg, Virginia.
